- Recently I was going through some old log book entries and I wanted to
- compare them with the solar conditions at the time. The book I have on
- solar conditions only listed entries to the late seventies. I figured
- that the data must be archived on the net somewhere and I found it at
- the National Geophysical Data Center Gopher run by NOAA. It has sunspot
- and solar flux records going back a few years.
- The gopher address is:

- The items in this week's bulletin are courtesy of Bob, W5KNE, QRZ
- DX, Chod, VP2ML, The DX Bulletin, Frank, AH0W, Dave, VE3CPU, Joe,
- NJ1Q, Warren, NF1J, the Yankee Clipper Contest Club PacketCluster
- network and the Contest Corral column in QST. Thanks.
-
- TONGA. Paul, KK6H, is supposed to be operating from here May 5
- through June 4, though as of press time there have yet to be any
- spots on the local PacketCluster node. Listen for Paul's CW and
- RTTY from the shack of A35CT. Paul has requested the call sign A36H
- and plans to be in the WPX CW contest. QSL via KK6H.
-
- JOHNSTON ISLAND. There is good news and bad news. First the bad
- news. The AH6IO/KH3 DXpedition by AH6IO and NH6UY has been
- cancelled. The good news is that satellite gear for the DXpedition
- will be used by KH3AF for about a month, so at least satellite DXers
- will have a chance at snagging this one.
-
- YEMEN. Robert, N4GCK, of 3Y0PI fame, has received permission to
- operate from Yemen. He will be on as 7O0CW during July for a period
- of 4 or 5 days, mostly CW.
-
- ZAIRE. Paul, F6EXV, has been active as 9Q5EXV. F5FHI is signing
- 9Q5FHI and has been worked on 7016 kHz at 0100z and 14193 at 1938.
- Both EXV and FHI are expected to move to other African locations
- soon.
-
- ITU HQ GENEVA. Listen for 4U9ITU being operated from station 4U1ITU
- until May 11.
-
- LIECHTENSTEIN. The 4U9ITU operators plan to operate HB0/DL8BDR/P
- with CW, SSB and TTY modes from May 12 to 15.
-
- DESECHEO ISLAND QRT. A spokesman for the US Fish and Wildlife
- Service reports that landing permission requests are being denied,
- so amateur activity from this island is on hold. This action is a
- result of modern day pirates and Haitian rebels occupying the
- island.
-
- SINT MAARTEN. From May 24 to 30, Chod, VP2ML/WB2CHO, and Frank,
- AH0W/OH2LVG, will be signing PJ7/WB2CHO and PJ7/OH2LVG respectively.
- They will team up to operate in the CQ WPX CW Contest as PJ8X. QSL
- PJ7/WB2CHO via K1RH. QSL PJ7/OH2LVG and PJ8X via KE7LZ.
-
- SAINT PAUL ISLAND. Five northeast Wisconsin amateurs are planning a
- 4 or 5 day DXpedition to CY9 between June 10 and 19, weather
- permitting. Check 25 kHz up on 40 through 15 meters. For SSB, try
- 3795, 7155, 14195, 18130, 21295 and 28350 kHz. RTTY will be on 7085
- and 14085 kHz. QSL via K0SN.
-
- QSL UPDATE. Cards for V2/VE3BW should go direct to VE3BW only.
-
- ON A SAD NOTE. Harvey McCoy, W2IYX, FSK RTTY pioneer and Editor of
- The Long Island DX Bulletin, recently became a Silent Key at age 83.
- RIP, Harvey.
-
- THIS WEEKEND ON THE RADIO. The ARI International DX Contest,
- sponsored by the Associazione Radioamatori Italiani, is from 2000z
- May 7 to 2000z May 8 on CW, SSB and RTTY. Italian stations will
- exchange QSO serial number and two letter province indentifier. All
- others send signal report and serial number.
-
- The Georgia QSO Party is from 1800z May 7 until 2000z May 8. For
- CW, check 3540, 7040, 14040, 21040, 28040 kHz and 50040 MHz. SSB
- activity will be around 3795, 7243, 14240, 21330, 28400 kHz and
- 50124 MHz. Georgia stations will exchange QSO serial number and
- their county. All others exchange serial number and state, province
- or DXCC country.
-
- For more info on the ARI DX contest and Georgia QSO Party, check
- page 115 of April QST.
-
- The Mobile Amateur Radio Awards Club, MARAC, is sponsor of the
- County Hunter's CW Contest, which runs from 0000z May 7 to 2400z May
- 8. Exchange RST and either county and state or province or DXCC
- country. Work stations once per band per county. Fixed station
- contacts are worth one point, mobile contacts are worth three
- points, and multipliers are the different US counties worked. Log
- submission deadline is June 8. Send to Norm Beavers, W3DYA, 3320
- McMillan Drive, Tyler, TX 75701.

- Wait until the government decides that ham radio is harmful to one's health and
- they want to ban certain high power devices like amplifiers or 900 mhz
- equipment. Government is getting in and invading our lives too much. We need
- to keep them out of our private lives. While it may just be guns today, it
- will be our radios tomorrow, or something else. Government, and this
- administration in particular, is reducing our rights in the name of protecting
- us from harm. You have to draw the line somewhere.

- KF7E and WD8NSD for the following DX information.
-
- 7O, YEMEN. It has been a little over a week since Robert, N4GCK (one of
- the operators of the 3Y0PI), announced the good news that he has received
- permission to operate as 7O0CW and he could be active during July. Now
- for the bad news! The newspapers report, "Yemen has edged toward civil
- war in a fight over the two regions since conservative North Yemen and
- socialist South Yemen united on May 22, 1990". Fierce fighting is
- reported between the northern and southern troops on the border region
- between Yemen's two feuding regions.
-
- A5, BHUTAN. Roderick, W5HVV, spoke with Jim Smith, VK9NS, on the air
- May 4th and Jim stated that he had spoken with the Ministry of
- Communication of Bhutan. Jim mentioned that he was anticipating a trip
- to Bhutan to operate. All the equipment and a beam are already there.
- Jim is only awaiting the final word from the Ministry of Communication
- and he would be off and running. There was an indication that Jim would
- also operate from Bangladesh (S2) and Nepal (9N), probably on his way
- to Bhutan.
-
- A6, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES. It has been reported that A61AN is a SLIM
- operating in Dubai. If you ask this station about QSL info, he will
- tell you, "FORGET IT! I did not QSL at all!". At Dayton, Don
- (WB2DND/A61AD) has also stated this station is operating illegeally and
- was claiming to be Nasir the "old" A61AF operator. Don also mentioned
- he will be return to U.A.E. in October.
-
- BY, CHINA. George, BY/KA3NRG, is now in Beijing on business during the
- month of May. George's free time is limited, but his plans are to operate
- the ususal SSB DX frequencies. He is a relatively new DXer, but he is
- savvy and says he will not hesitate to QSY or pull the plug should the
- gang become unruly. QSL via K3WS.
-
- KH0, MARIANA ISLANDS. From May 26-30th, JA6VZB and JF6BCC will be active
- as AH0T and KH2GR/KH0, respectively. Operations will be on 160-10 meters,
- CW/SSB and RTTY; and they will participate in the WPX contest.
-
- VR6, PITCAIRN ISLAND. According to Dave, VR6ME, as of April, VR stations
- are allowed to use 12 and 17 meters. He states operations prior to this
- were not quite legit. Also, he stated the new call sign for the Pitcairn
- Amateur Radio Club is now VR6PAC.
-
- DX-TIDBITS..... Jim, 5X1B, will be (or is) QRT in May, but heads for
- Cameroon (TJ) after a home leave...... Because of budget cutbacks in
- Moscow, the Vostok Antarctic outpost (4K1C) has been recently abandoned.
- The Vostok base holds the record for the coldest spot on earth. 129
- below zero, achieved on July 21, 1983...... Mike, ZD8M (G3UOF), has
- gone QRT from Ascention Island as March 16, 1994. A report of using his
- (G3UOF) home address, instead of the Ascention Island address, results
- in a quicker turn around of his QSL cards.....
-
- NOT ACCEPTED BY THE DXCC DESK. Bill, K5FUV, at the Dayton HamVention DX
- Forum, entertained a few question about a few operations and has stated
- the following:
- The I2RAO/HK0 (Malpelo) cards were not being accepted because the
- operator apparently just showed up at the island and asked the
- persons that were there for permission to land. I2RAO did not receive
- the permission from the right govenrment agency and that it was
- unlikely that permission would ever be granted. The cards would
- probably never be accepted.
-
- The FR/DJ6SI/G (Glorioso) cards would not be accepted because Baldur
- did not have the proper permission to be there.
-
- DAYTON HAMVENTION SUMMARY (From a DXer's point a view! by KB8NW).
- Another Dayton HamVention has come and gone, and there are good and
- bad things to remember about this convention (naturally the good out
- weigh the bad). The only major complaint is that "Mother-Nature" was
- not too kind to the conventioneers. I do beleive that this is four
- years in a row of bad and rainy weather. Many of us wait all year for
- this special event to happen. Hey! Does anyone have "Mother-Nature's"
- InterNet address? (Doesn't InterNet go anywhere?) Maybe we can send
- her a message and ask her to
- "P L E A S E"
- "Give......Us.....A......Break......Next.....Year!".
- At least she can not disrupt the DX Forum, DX Dinner Banquet and the
- visiting of the hospitally suites. I look forward every year to meet with
- old and new friends at these special activities. For me, this is the
- highlight of the HamVention. If you are a DXer and have never attended at
- least one of these functions, you are missing out on the whole purpose
- of this "CONVENTION".
- Those that attended the Southwest Ohio DX Association's Dinner Banquet
- were treated to a great slide presentation on the 3Y0PI DXpedition by
- Ralph Fedor, K0IR. After the banquet, members of the 3Y0PI DXpedition
- were on hand in one of the hospitality suites, to meet and greet all;
- plus to autograph an excellent book on the 3Y0PI DXpedition written by
- Bob Schmieder, KK6EK.
- At the DX Forum there were presentations by Bill Kennamer, K5FUV
- (DXCC Administrator) and Bob Beatty, W4VQ (DXAC Chairman). Bill give an
- update on status of the DXCC Desk in the processings of the applications,
- changes and the growth of DXing. Bob's talk dealt with the DX Advisory
- Committee past and present activities.
- Other presentations included: Richard Grantham's (VE1AI) DXpedition
- to C51A, Igor Zdorov's (KU0J) DXpedition 1B/KU0J and Holger Hannenmann's
- (DL7VTM) 1992 Pacific DXpedition. It was great to see and meet again,
- NODXA member Holger and his girlfriend Birgit (DG9WYL). Holger introduced
- me to his QSL Manager, Fritz (DL7VRO), and his daughter Silke. Plans were
- worked out later to have both Fritz and Silke attended the NODXA meeting
- the Monday after the Hamvention.
- But the highlight of the DX Forum was another presentation on the
- 3Y0PI DXpedition by Terry Dubson, W6MKB. This presentation was totally
- different from the one that Ralph, K0IR, presented. Different slides and
- a rough cut video were shown. After the presentation, the 3Y team were
- applauded and received a standing ovation.
- In summary, Dayton was not a total loss. As long as there can be an
- international gathering of friends and a show of goodwill, I will keep
- returning to the Dayton HamVention.

- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- The Q signal, QLF, usually means in the interrogatory form,
- "shall i send with my left foot?" or "are you sending with
- your left foot?". Probably meaning, in the latter case, the
- operator is having problems copying a poor fist. I
- don't see this on in chapter 37 in the Q signals of the 1992 Handbook. :-)
-
- At many ham fests around the country, there is a contest called
- the QLF Contest. This usually means there is a large straight
- key made of wood sitting on the floor. The contestants usually
- remove one shoe, are given a piece of paper with plain text on
- it, and have to send the text as rapidly and accurately as they
- can. In many cases the contestant is standing on one foot while
- sending with the other. The key is connected to an audio oscillator
- and a team of judges may score the operator on style, grace, speed,
- accuracy, and whatever else they predetermine, then the contestants
- are awarded certificates or whatever at the end of the contest.
-
- I am looking for the plans for such a key that people may have
- built or use in such contests. If you have such a thing, please
- email to me at adams@sgi.com or if you are inclined, fax to
- (214) 788-1376. I'm good in the callbook for the last 6 years
- if you want to use the US Post Office.
-
- Any help greatly appreciated. I'm running such a contest at
- Hamcom in Dallas in June. Was going to do it last year, but the key
- didn't show up. Going to go ahead and build one, but the
- time in design, etc. doesn't appeal to me.
-
- I'd be interested in "war stories" about such events that you've
- seen.

- My most memorable version of this took place at one of the Laramie
- Wyoming get togethers in the mid 70's. This was an indoor event and
- the code contest was the best show of the day. The key consisted of a
- spring loaded toilet seat with contacts. By the way, it was won by a
- yl. Best cheeks in town! :)

- Hi Gang,
-
- I picked up one of these HT's at a pawn shop the other day. From all
- outward appearances, it looks like a Yaesu FT-470 (case, battery pack,
- kybd, etc), but it is only 70cm not dual band. At least I have not found
- the trick to get it to work 2m/70cm. What I need to know is:
- 1 - Is it made by Yaesu?
- 2 - Is it functionally equivalent to the FT-470?
- 3 - If not, does anybody have a manual that I can copy?
- 4 - Was it designed as a business band HT?
-
- Any help, anybody can give would be greatly appreciated.

- No one is making a monetary profit from Newsline. But I wonder if someone
- might be profiting from the airing of Spectrum. If so, then Big Steve
- is conducting commercial advertising on the rec.radio groups.
